A career in automotive mechanics involves inspecting, servicing, and repairing the engine, brakes, and other parts of cars. These professionals use specialized equipment to determine whether a vehicle needs a repair. They must be familiar with different types of vehicles, including gasoline and diesel powered vehicles.

Their training should also include knowledge of automotive electronics and safety practices. In addition, they must be able to recognize problems with mechanical equipment and interpret technical manuals.

Automotive mechanics diagnose engine problems, adjust fuel levels, and check the level of fluids in vehicles. They also use electronic testing equipment and computer diagnostic tools to troubleshoot a vehicle’s systems. They must also know how to use a variety of tools, such as pneumatic wrenches and welding torches.

In addition to fixing engines and brakes, automotive mechanics also work with air- conditioning systems. They install and repair air-conditioning systems, and they are trained to handle refrigerants. Other auto mechanic jobs include fixing and installing front-end components of cars, such as steering mechanisms and suspension   systems. Some automotive mechanics specialize in specific kinds of repair, such as electrical or transmission problems.
